Awkward Family Portraits (AFP) have been dishing out rockin’ roots music to the streets of Glasgow Scotland since their formation in 2016, Cutting their teeth on a diet of regular live performances around diverse local music haunts, AFP have been gathering a wide-ranging demographic of loyal supporters over the past 2 ½ years; securing their position in Glasgow’s thriving underground roots music scene.

 

They have been steadily evolving and expanding their music; continually cultivating their sound and refining their techniques. Rather than existing in a closed box, they present a fresh diet flavoured by old-school Americana, rock and roll, bluegrass, blues and Western swing, using ‘roots music’ as an umbrella term to encompass their eclectic range of styles and sounds.

Although influenced by the music of early to mid- 20th Century America and the various modern bands revitalising these sounds of the past, AFP are more than just a throwback, “with a roguish charm and signature style that elevates them far above the dusty stereotypes of the genre”.

By blending nostalgic, earworm melodies, the band have created a unique signature sound to showcase their library of innovative originals which range from vivacious and light-hearted to courageously raw and honest, all while remaining relatable and socially/politically engaged.

 

2018 was a big year for AFP with appearances at a wealth of music festivals and many notable live gigs such as Tenement trail and headlining at the likes of King Tuts Wah Wah Hut. Last year also saw AFP expanding their reach with live performances and radio appearances around the UK as well as the Netherlands and Spain.

 

To continue their upward trajectory, the band have their sights set high for 2019. With dates already in the diary for a variety of incredibly exciting shows, festivals, launches and supports: AFP’s next endeavour is to capture the exuberance of their trademark live shows in an album exhibiting their distinguished signature sound.
